Bide your time, but don't wait too long or you won't get any candy!

In Piñatas, you want to take tricks as late as you can.

Once you take three tricks, you're out of the round. But, you get points for how many tricks won by other players BEFORE you went out. If you wait too long and go out last, you'll only score your own won tricks!

Designed by Dr. Reiner Knizia, Piñatas has an elegantly simple ruleset with his signature spin on scoring. Combine that with an explosive art style (that will make you feel a bit bad for the piñatas at the end of the day), and you've got a trick-taking game that you can't stop playing.

What makes Piñatas stand out?

Why We Love It

Just like waiting in line to hit a piñata, this game has a lot of tension. Some players push the envelope, some players play conservatively and try to go out early. Both can work!

The delectable candy tokens and piñata-related cartoon violence make this game a delight to have on the table. You'll find yourself staring—cringing—at the cards!

Components

Bust it open!

  • A
80 Playing Cards (ranks 0-15 in 5 suits)
  • B
    5 Suit Tokens
  • C
    68 Point Tokens (values 1 and 5)

How to Play Piñatas

1) Shuffle and deal each player a hand of 13 cards (or 14 with 5 players)

Whoever most recently went to a party is the first player

2) The starting player leads with any card

Going clockwise, players must follow the lead suit if they're able. The winner of the trick goes to the highest played card of the lead suit.

3) Score when you go out

After reaching the required hands to go out, score the total number of tricks all OTHER players have won.

4) Last to go out

The round ends when all but 1 of the players have gone out. That player scores points equal to the number tricks THEY ALONE have won.
